Verse 143Dialogue

Who Is the Ritual Doer?

Devi

Here the question is: if everything is ultimately one, who is doing the chanting or meditation? The verse points to a state where the usual idea of “me doing practice” starts to dissolve. It asks whether worship itself makes sense when there is no separate self left.

एवमुिव्यवस्थायां जप्यते को जपश्च कः । ध्यायते को महानाथ पूज्यते कश्च तृप्यति ॥ १४३ ॥

evam uvyavasthāyāṃ japyate ko japaś ca kaḥ | dhyāyate ko mahānātha pūjyate kash ca tṛpyati || 143 ||

Translation

In such a condition, who is it that recites, and what is recitation? Who meditates, O Great Lord, who is worshiped, and who is satisfied?

Devi probes the collapse of subject-object distinctions in the highest realization, where ritual roles lose their footing.
