Verse 158Dialogue

Not for the Cruel or Hostile

Bhairava

This verse says the teaching is not suited to someone who is mean, disrespectful, or closed-hearted. It is meant for people who are brave, sincere, and able to look beyond rigid opinions. In other words, the container matters as much as the content.

विज्ञानभैरव तन्त्रम् परवशष्ये खले क्रूरे अभिे गुरुपादयो् । वनविधकल्पमतीनां तु िीराणां उन्नतात्मनाम् ॥ १५८ ॥

vijñānabhairava tantram | para-śiṣye khale krūre abhakte guru-pādayoḥ | nirvikalpa-matīnāṃ tu vīrāṇāṃ unnatātmanām || 158 ||

Translation

Not for the unrighteous student, the wicked, the cruel, or the irreverent toward the guru's feet, but for the heroic, exalted ones whose minds are free from conceptual division.

It specifies the qualities required to receive the teaching: reverence, courage, and a mind beyond conceptual fragmentation.
