Verse 139Dialogue
The Hundred Teachings and the Beyond
Bhairava
This verse signals that many teachings have been given in summary form. But it also says that real understanding comes from seeing what lies beyond the twelve—meaning beyond fixed counts, categories, or methods. The point is to move from listening to direct realization.
वनस्तरङ्गोपदेशानां शतमुक्तं समासत् । द्वादशाभ्यवधकं देवि यज्ज्ञात्वा ज्ञानविज्जन् ॥ १३९ ॥
nirantaraṅga-upadeśānāṃ śatam uktaṃ samāsataḥ | dvādaśābhyadhikaṃ devi yaj jñātvā jñāna-vij jayet || 139 ||
Translation
Thus, O Devi, a hundred continuous teachings have been briefly spoken. Knowing what is beyond the twelve, one becomes a knower of knowledge.
To conclude the teaching by affirming the completeness of the methods and pointing beyond them to direct knowledge.
